Cancelled: a guide for employers, HR & Employees

Cancel culture, also known as call-out culture or public shaming, is a phenomenon online where individuals target and try to destroy the lives and careers of others who they deem “bad guys.” This can happen to anyone, from politicians and comedians to everyday people. This form of mob justice is ideological rather than based on truth or justice. Cancelled individuals face attacks on their public image, job, and even their families. Employers need to be aware of how to handle these situations and support their employees if they face cancellation. The goal of cancel culture is to exert psychological pressure and silence individuals with differing opinions, and it often starts with targeting low-hanging fruit before moving on to more high-profile figures.
